A Texarkana, Texas, Street Department crew made an unusual discovery while repaving Falvey Street — a grave marker buried underneath the roadway.
The marker belonged to Dial Amos, a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II.
After some detective work, Assistant Police Chief Shawn Fitzgerald tracked down a man believed to be Amos’ grandson in Fort Worth. The family was just as surprised to learn the marker had been found under a Texarkana street.
The marker has now been returned to the funeral home in Daingerfield.
But one mystery remains: How did a World War II veteran’s grave marker end up buried under Falvey Street?
