According to authorities, Arkansas State Police alerted officers that Tommy Sevier, who had an active felony warrant, was expected to be traveling on Dooley Ferry Road. Officers later located Sevier in a white GMC Terrain and attempted to make contact.
During the encounter, Sevier appeared agitated and told officers he did not want to return to prison. He initially surrendered one firearm but later produced a second weapon.
Investigators say Sevier attempted to fire the weapon before ultimately shooting himself. An officer, believing Sevier posed a threat, also fired, striking him in a non-critical area.
Sevier was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. Authorities confirmed his fatal injury was self-inflicted.
An internal review by the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department, along with an investigation by the Arkansas State Police, found the officer acted within department policy. The Eighth South Judicial District Prosecutor’s Office also ruled the use of force was justified.
Officials say the incident remains difficult for the family and the community.
