A Texas lawmaker is backing a bill to shield police officers from being charged with deadly conduct while on duty. House Bill 2436, by Rep. Cole Hefner of Mount Pleasant, recently won preliminary approval in the Texas House. Hefner says the law is being misused to unfairly target officers acting in the line of duty. Supporters say it protects officers making split-second decisions. But critics, including the ACLU of Texas, warn it could allow officers to use force without accountability. A similar bill is also moving through the Texas Senate.
